More Than a School. A Legacy Built on Excellence.

Founded in 1995. Still Driven by the Same Vision.

Académie Marie-Claire was not born in a boardroom. It began in 1995 in the basement of its founder, Madame Marie-Claire Martin, with two registered children, a curriculum rooted in the arts, and a commitment to home-cooked meals and genuine educational care.

Madame Martin is a pioneering figure in Québec education: the first and only Black woman to found a private educational institution in the province. Born and educated in Haiti, where she earned her degree in pedagogy from the University of Haiti, she came to Montreal with a vision that the existing school system could not contain. So, she built her own.

From those humble beginnings, a network of daycares grew into a full-fledged Academy that opened its doors in 1997. Today, the Kirkland campus welcomes over 400 students from age 2 through Secondary V, in a prestigious environment where science, technology, and trilingualism thrive.

The school’s motto — “Toujours plus haut… Toujours plus loin” (Always Higher… Always Further) — is not marketing copy. It is the operating principle that has guided every decision made since day one.

More Than a School. A Legacy Built on Excellence.

Founded in 1981. The Academy Opens in 1995. Still Driven by the Same Vision.

Académie Marie-Claire did not have a grand opening or ribbon-cutting ceremony. It began in 1981 in the home of its founder, Madame Marie-Claire Martin, with a single educational daycare and a conviction that children in Montreal’s West Island deserved something better than what existed.

Madame Martin is a singular figure in Quebec education. Against all odds, she established the first private educational institution offering a bilingual, academically enriched curriculum with a third-language option.

For fourteen years, she built. The daycare grew. Her reputation for excellence, warmth, and genuine care for children spread across the West Island. Families sought her out. The waiting lists grew longer. It became clear that a daycare was not enough — that what this community needed, and what she was capable of creating, was something far more complete.

In 1995, Académie Marie-Claire opened as a full private school. From kindergarten through the elementary years, and eventually through Secondary V, the Academy became the institution Madame Martin had always envisioned — rigorous, bilingual, warm, and uncompromising in its belief that every child is capable of more than most schools expect from them.

Today, over 400 students from age 2 through Secondary V walk through these doors every day. The science lab, the trilingual curriculum, the specialist teachers, the home-cooked lunches — all of it traces back to one woman who started with a daycare in 1981 and never stopped building.

“Toujours plus haut… Toujours plus loin” (Always Higher… Always Further)

This was not invented by a marketing team. It is the story of how this school came to exist.

Our Mission

To enrich the lives of students by providing a warm, caring, and safe environment where growth opportunities are abundant, exposure to knowledge is plentiful, and every child is developed into a leader and a contributing member of the larger community.

Our Philosophy

We believe that the measure of a great education is not what a child memorizes — it is who they become. At Académie Marie-Claire, we pursue academic excellence and character development simultaneously. Our students learn to think critically, communicate across languages, collaborate across differences, and take personal responsibility for their actions and their impact on others.

We do not teach to the minimum. We teach above it, always — and we do so within a deeply human school culture: warm, structured, respectful, and genuinely invested in each child.

Not Just Better — Genuinely Unique

Académie Marie-Claire is the only school in Canada to have produced an International Mathematics Olympiad champion. This is not a coincidence — it reflects a decades-long commitment to mathematical excellence that begins in Kindergarten.

The Only International Mathematics Champion in Canadian History

Our school employs a specialist model at every level. The mathematics teacher teaches only mathematics. The French teacher teaches only French. This is true for every subject, every grade, every day. The result: deeper expertise, higher engagement, and students who receive instruction from true specialists in their field.

Subject Specialists from Kindergarten Onward

Our enriched curriculum consistently produces students who perform at least one academic year above the provincial grade-level standard. For some students and subjects, that advantage extends to three years. It is built into how we teach, not something we hope for.

A Minimum of One Year Ahead

Students leave Académie Marie-Claire having learned in two official languages throughout their entire education, and a third language — Spanish, Italian, or Mandarin — from elementary school onward. In an increasingly global economy, this is among the most valuable gifts an education can offer.

Hands-on science education is not reserved for high school here. Our state-of-the-art science laboratory is accessible to primary students, giving young learners early exposure to experimentation, inquiry-based learning, and scientific thinking.

Madame Marie-Claire Martin, Founder and General Director

Madame Martin’s story is one of perseverance, vision, and an uncompromising love for children. Now approaching her 80s, she remains actively present at the school every day — working alongside directors, personally supporting students who need extra encouragement, and ensuring the Academy’s standards never slip.

Her approach to education is deeply personal. She does not manage from a distance. She is in the building, in the classrooms, and in the lives of her students.

Her approach to education is deeply personal. She does not manage from a distance. She is in the building, in the classrooms, and in the lives of her students. That presence — felt by every child, every teacher, and every family in the building — cannot be replicated. It is the soul of this school.

Leadership and Faculty

Académie Marie-Claire is led by an experienced administrative team committed to both academic rigour and community well-being. Our teachers are subject-area specialists who bring deep expertise, genuine care, and high expectations to every lesson.

Faculty are selected not only for their qualifications but for their alignment with the Academy’s values: a belief in each student’s potential, a passion for their discipline, and a commitment to showing up fully for the children in their care.

A Community Built on Respect, Discipline, and Belonging

The culture at Académie Marie-Claire is deliberately cultivated. Students are expected to uphold the school’s values — respect, responsibility, kindness, perseverance — and they are supported in doing so every day by adults who model those same values.

The diversity of our student body and staff is a genuine strength. Students learn alongside peers from different cultural backgrounds, developing the empathy, perspective, and collaborative instincts they will need throughout their lives.
